In the world of communication transmission media plays the very important role without transmission media there is no communication. Transmission media is broadly classified in two parts.
1) Wireless Transmission media
2) Wired Transmission media
In wireless transmission, information is sent with the help of EM waves, whereas in wired transmission, information is sent via light, electrical signal etc depending on the type of wired transmission media used
Now types of wired media which is the main point of this blog.
Wired Transmission media are of three types.
- Twisted Pair
- Coaxial Cable
- Optical fiber
- Twisted Pair:
Twisted pair cable is one of the type of copper wire, in twisted pair two wires are used which twisted together to cancel out EMI. There are types of twisted pair, UTP (unshielded twisted pair) and STP (Shielded twisted pair) again they are classified depending upon the number of twist per inch.
- CAT 1 (1 twist per inch)
- CAT 2 (2 twist per inch)
- CAT 3 (3 twist per inch)
- CAT 4 (4 twist per inch)
- CAT 5 (5 twist per inch)
- Coaxial cable:
Coaxial cable consists of solid copper core surrounded by an insulator mainly made up of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) or Teflon. Coaxial cables are less prone to interference (both internal and external).example RG58, RG6, RG8 and RG59
- Optical fiber:
An optical fiber is a flexible, transparent fiber made by silica or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair. Optical fiber‘s geometry consist of two elements one is core and other is cladding both are transparent. Cladding has lower refractive index than core.
Working Principle of optical fiber is total internal reflection (TIR). In TIR incident light reflected back to the same medium, this happen when the angle of incidence is greater than critical angle. Examples: Single mode fiber (SMF) and Multimode fiber (MMF).
